SUMMARY:RAiNA Hosted Member Webinar: Understanding Advancing Wall System Design around Continuous Insulation (Stuff It or Wrap It)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 19\, 2023 1-2PM EDT \nThis session explores evolving trends in building enclosure technology and subsequent changes in energy-efficient building design\, with a special focus on the role of continuous exterior insulation (CI) within rainscreen assemblies. The net energy savings realized in a properly insulated building are by now well understood\, and these savings are increasingly being required by stringent local building and energy codes. Current building science research and field monitoring data will be presented to demonstrate how the effective R-value of various insulating materials perform and change in differing regional climates\, temperature ranges\, and seasonal conditions. Strategies for designing and constructing highly insulated and cost-effective wall assemblies while still minimizing thermal bridging are also discussed. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n1. Consider how recent changes in building and energy codes can and should influence your design strategy for producing whole building energy efficiency. \n2. Understand how proper material selection and good design for wall assemblies are critical for ensuring reliable long term energy-efficient performance \n3. Learn how newer cladding attachment systems are being utilized in the construction of highly insulated wall assemblies and how to apply these technologies to your projects. \n4. Gain a better understanding of how these systems are being installed in the field and the minimal changes to current construction practices. \nPresenter: Todd Kimmel ROCKWOOL\, US Senior Manager – Sustainable Solutions \n Register

SUMMARY:Moisture Management and Protection Strategies for Mass Timber Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Interest in mass timber and awareness of its advantages have exploded in recent years. But with any new construction technique comes new challenges. For mass timber\, a particular concern is moisture protection during construction: there have been many examples of floor and roof panels exposed to snow or rain\, resulting in significant increases in wood moisture content and the potential for slow and limited drying ability depending on the assembly. \nSignificant wetting of mass timber during construction can lead to staining of finished surfaces\, requiring sanding and refinishing\, as well as expansion leading to damaged mechanical connections\, fungal growth\, and the possibility of structural damage. Fortunately\, many solutions exist\, but choosing between them can be daunting—the cost-benefit of these strategies is often questioned  and becomes a risk management choice. \n Register

SUMMARY:Zoning for Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:This April\, the New York City Department of City Planning proposed amendments to the city’s zoning resolution that would modernize the zoning code to make it easier to meet our climate goals. The proposed changes—referred to as City of Yes for Carbon Neutrality—will cover energy\, buildings\, transportation\, waste and stormwater\, and they include recommendations from Urban Green’s 2018 Zone Greener report. \nIf enacted\, these changes will remove some existing barriers to decarbonization projects in the NYC zoning code\, and are particularly important for buildings. The amendments are now under a public review period\, and members of the public will be able to voice their comments at a City Planning Commission public hearing in July. \n Register Now \nEvent Cost \n\nNon-member: $20\nCore Member (incl. SUMMARY:NYC Next: Trends for a Changing City
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 8\, 2023\nTime: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nLocation: In-Person • NYU Kimmel Center for University Life\nRegister: https://www.urbangreencouncil.org/2023-conference/  \nUse Code NYPH10 for $10 off tickets to the conference. \nEvent description\nGetting to net zero\, housing conversions\, and resilient all-electric buildings. \nTo reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050\, New York City will continue to undergo some pretty big changes. And as buildings are responsible for more than two-thirds of the city’s emissions\, the majority of those changes will occur in the places where we live\, work and gather. But what can we expect these changes to be? How will buildings in 2050 look different from today? Who will do the work? And how does it all fit into the larger scope of the Paris Climate Agreement\, which aims to bring emissions to net zero by 2050? \nIn our 2023 conference\, NYC Next: Trends for a Changing City\, we’re bringing together experts to explain three key trends that will shape the city: getting to net zero\, converting offices to apartments\, and centering resiliency in NYC’s buildings of the future. We’ll talk to the individuals who have an inside look at these trends and are doing the work to make NYC’s climate targets a reality. \n Learn more

SUMMARY:Pratt Brooklyn Ice Box Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY\, is set to host the first-ever US collegiate design-build rendition of the\ninternational Passive House Ice Box Challenge this spring. The event\, known as the ‘Pratt Brooklyn Ice\nBox Challenge\,’ aims to showcase the advantages of energy-efficient buildings designed to implement\nPassive House standards as a crucial solution to climate action. \nPratt Institute’s mission is to empower the next generation of architects to create eco-friendly environments and actively participate in the green economy. To this end\, Pratt visiting professor Passive House architect\, In Cho\, as an extension of her climate education non-profit Passive House For Everyone\, has developed a design studio curriculum to teach students how to design and build sustainable structures\, then test them to see how well they perform. \nFor the Pratt Brooklyn Ice Box Challenge\, Professor In Cho’s architecture students will construct two ice\nbox structures: one built to standard building code and the other to a high-performance Passive House building standard. Both structures will be filled with half a ton of ice each\, sealed closed\, and opened one week later to measure how well they have kept out heat. \nThrough this public exhibit\, the Ice Box Challenge aims to make energy efficiency concepts more visible\,\ntangible\, and engaging while increasing public awareness. The event will showcase Pratt’s student-\ndesigned and built structures to demonstrate how implementing Passive House principles can make better buildings. This endeavor supports the international Passive House community efforts for a sustainable built environment that aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals for Net Zero by 2050. \nPassive House is a set of building principles and standards that significantly reduce buildings’ energy use\, lower heating and cooling energy demands by up to 90%\, and provide occupants with comfort and health\, increasing economic\, environmental\, and social resilience. “With our built environment responsible for 40% of carbon emissions globally that contribute to climate change\, sustainably designed buildings are critical to climate solutions. The Ice Box Challenge aims to raise public awareness about how Passive House design can help mitigate climate change\, empowering everyone\, and especially our youth\, with the knowledge and skills to be leaders in building an environmentally and socially sustainable world”\, says In Cho. \nStarting on May 1\, 2023\, the Pratt Brooklyn Ice Box Challenge will take place at Pratt Institute’s main\ncampus\, with the final result to be revealed on May 8th. The event is hosted by Pratt Institute\,\ncoordinated by Passive House For Everyone\, and made possible by generous donations from advocate\nsponsors: Sto-Corp\, Rockwool\, 475 High-Performance Building Supply\, Klearwall\, Square Indigo and\nPassive House For Everyone. And is further supported by the International Passive House Association\,\nPassive House Network\, NYC DOE Office of Sustainability\, Building Action Coalition\, Zehnder\, Cascadia\nClip\, and Knightwall. \n Learn More… \nJoin us for the Ice Box Challenge Reveal on May 8 from 12 to 2 pm.

SUMMARY:iPHA webinar: Quality assurance concepts for fast deep renovation approaches
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will talk about quality assurance concepts for fast and deep retrofits. The outPHit project is developing quality assurance approaches to evaluate and approve energy efficiency concepts for renovation projects before and after the renovation works. \nA design stage approval concept can ensure building owners and investors that the retrofit can achieve the level of energy efficiency targeted. Certification of different renovation systems will ensure that the components used for the retrofit fulfil the energy efficiency requirements suitable for a renovation to the EnerPHit standard. \nTo verify the success of deep renovation projects\, outPHit has also developed the Verified Performance Certification\, which allows the evaluation of the building’s post-occupancy behaviour with performance data gathered by a minimal monitoring concept. \nYou can choose from two sessions:\nSession 1: 9:00 AM Frankfurt / 8:00 AM London / 4:00 PM Beijing / 7:00 PM Sydney\, Time zone converter\nSession 2: 6:00 PM Frankfurt / 5:00 PM London / noon New York / 9:00 AM San Francisco\, Time zone converter \nThis iPHA member webinar will last approximately 90 minutes and is worth 2 Passive House Continuous Education (CEPH) credit point. \nThe iPHA webinar series is a member benefit and free for all members. \nNEW: Non-members can access the webinars for 30 EUR. \nNot a member yet? Sign up and become a member and take advantage of the many benefits iPHA provides. \n Register Now!

SUMMARY:TOWARDS A BUILDINGS BREAKTHROUGH: RAISING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, 23 September 2022\nTime: 10:15 AM – 11:15 AM EDT (GMT-4)\nLocation: Room 412\, David L. Lawrence Convention Center\, Pittsburgh USA\nFormat: in-person event (no livestream)\n\nEvent Description\nIn 2020\, the buildings and construction sector accounted for 36% of global final energy consumption and 37% of energy-related CO2 emissions (UNEP/GlobalABC\, 2021). The challenges to reaching high performance buildings are considerable as 82% of the people who will be added to the planet by 2030 live in countries without building energy codes or only voluntary codes. On a positive note\, over 65% will live in countries that have NDCs that mention building energy efficiency and/or building codes to improve energy performance. \nThe building and construction sector is key for national economies globally and plays an essential role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and delivering the Paris Agreement.  Net-zero carbon emissions must be achieved across the overall building life cycle globally by no later than 2050 to achieve the Paris Agreement\, and yet the sector is not on track.  The transition to high performance in the sector calls for deep\, sector-wide transformation. \nThis event will highlight the importance of the built environment for energy performance\, climate action\, and quality of life. It will call for real action on the ground involving close collaboration among the actors in all sectors involved in the built environment. It will call for acceleration of the transition at global scale through deployment of ambitious national strategies and policies to improve building performance. The event will showcase the planned Buildings Breakthrough target and present the GlobalABC and HPBI as effective vehicles for attaining the target. \nA round-table will explore the link between the target\, the roadmaps for action\, and the HPBI\, and the session will call for rapid improvement at global scale.  The session will feature International Centres of Excellence on High Performance Buildings; presentation of the global academic initiative on research and education; progress toward a UN protocol on the built environment with international thought leaders defining goals and an implementation strategy; and diverse industry actors launching an integrated strategy to decarbonize the built environment\, including workforce and economic development opportunities. \nObjectives\n\nHighlight the Buildings Breakthrough target to be announced at COP27\nPresent the GlobalABC Buildings and Construction roadmaps and HBPI as effective vehicles for attaining the target\nInvite countries to join the buildings breakthrough and all stakeholders to support HPBI\nEnhance the visibility of GlobalABC and HPBI to attract partners and stakeholders\n\nLearn More
