SUMMARY:Project Spotlight: outPHit single-family concept retrofit in Germany
DESCRIPTION:This iPHA webinar overviews the serial modernizations implemented in the EU project outPHit. Using the renovation of a single-family home in Darmstadt\, Germany\, the speaker\, Dr Berthold Kaufmann\, provides detailed insights into the implementation and planning of the building. \nWhile single-family Passive Houses are a well-established building typology\, the outPHit streamlined approach can make the building process more efficient and quicker. Having a formulated concept from the beginning of the retrofit process helps avoid mistakes and supports the project team in making the right decisions early on. \nThis lecture is part of the EU project outPHit. The European Union funds the project to simplify renovations and reliably create highly efficient buildings.

SUMMARY:Eternal growth? Degrowth? Energy Efficiency for a somewhat different approach
DESCRIPTION:A webinar with Prof. Wolfgang Feist\, Passive House Institute\nEconomic growth is the almost universally used yardstick for evaluating success (of a company\, a nation\, or a government). There has long been a debate about whether this is the proper yardstick – and it is a matter of great debate. In this webinar\, however\, the author will shed light on some more important growth aspects: Has economic growth been permanently exponential? Can there be economic growth while\, at the same time\, the consumption of non-renewable resources decreases? \nThis iPHA member webinar will last approximately 90 minutes and is worth 2 Passive House Continuous Education (CEPH) credit points. \n Register Now \n\nFree for NYPH members: \n Join us Today

SUMMARY:Guidance for Emerging Sustainable Design Warriors 2: Passive House Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:The first tour (House 1:The Von Mueller House in Midwood/Flatbush Area) will be offered at 11:30 AM–1:00 PM and the second tour (House 2: Park Slope House in Park Slope Area) will be from 2:30–4:00 PM.  \nIt is a 45 minute car drive between both homes.\nWe are organizing a bus to transport attendees from House 1 to House 2. Please be sure to let us know if you will need a seat on the bus by answering the required question during registration. \nGuidance for Emerging Sustainable Design Warriors: House Tour is intended to take a deep dive through two existing home renovations. Both projects are based on Passive House principles that demonstrate Net Zero achievements and sustainable entrepreneurship strategies. These principles can inform public policy to create meaningful and achievable incentives for “Net Zero Zip Codes” that can also serve as green economic zones. \nThe Von Mueller House is an ongoing collaboration between the building owner and the Vihara Foundation’s Super Energy Efficiency Building Initiative for Climate Action (SEEBICA). SEEBICA aims to deliver a scalable net-zero community housing retrofit—a model being designed for urban cities to achieve high-performance residential sector building energy efficiency at scale. This is achieved through solar photovoltaic\, shallow field geothermal heat pump heating and cooling\, rainwater harvesting\, provisioning for salt water battery energy storage\, mechanical ventilation\, a green wall for food production and summer solar heat gain reduction\, onsite composting and gardening and optimized utility efficiency. \nThe Park Slope House\, an 1880’s house renovation\, is unique as it utilized a prototype German Air to Water heat pump system provided by Dimplex Germany and Taco United States for the mechanical system which consists of hydronic radiant floor and AC/dehumidification. SUMMARY:RAiNA Hosted Member Webinar: Understanding Advancing Wall System Design around Continuous Insulation (Stuff It or Wrap It)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 19\, 2023 1-2PM EDT \nThis session explores evolving trends in building enclosure technology and subsequent changes in energy-efficient building design\, with a special focus on the role of continuous exterior insulation (CI) within rainscreen assemblies. The net energy savings realized in a properly insulated building are by now well understood\, and these savings are increasingly being required by stringent local building and energy codes. Current building science research and field monitoring data will be presented to demonstrate how the effective R-value of various insulating materials perform and change in differing regional climates\, temperature ranges\, and seasonal conditions. Strategies for designing and constructing highly insulated and cost-effective wall assemblies while still minimizing thermal bridging are also discussed. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n1. Consider how recent changes in building and energy codes can and should influence your design strategy for producing whole building energy efficiency. \n2. Understand how proper material selection and good design for wall assemblies are critical for ensuring reliable long term energy-efficient performance \n3. Learn how newer cladding attachment systems are being utilized in the construction of highly insulated wall assemblies and how to apply these technologies to your projects. \n4. Gain a better understanding of how these systems are being installed in the field and the minimal changes to current construction practices. \nPresenter: Todd Kimmel ROCKWOOL\, US Senior Manager – Sustainable Solutions \n Register

SUMMARY:Moisture Management and Protection Strategies for Mass Timber Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Interest in mass timber and awareness of its advantages have exploded in recent years. But with any new construction technique comes new challenges. For mass timber\, a particular concern is moisture protection during construction: there have been many examples of floor and roof panels exposed to snow or rain\, resulting in significant increases in wood moisture content and the potential for slow and limited drying ability depending on the assembly. \nSignificant wetting of mass timber during construction can lead to staining of finished surfaces\, requiring sanding and refinishing\, as well as expansion leading to damaged mechanical connections\, fungal growth\, and the possibility of structural damage. Fortunately\, many solutions exist\, but choosing between them can be daunting—the cost-benefit of these strategies is often questioned  and becomes a risk management choice. \n Register

SUMMARY:Zoning for Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:This April\, the New York City Department of City Planning proposed amendments to the city’s zoning resolution that would modernize the zoning code to make it easier to meet our climate goals. The proposed changes—referred to as City of Yes for Carbon Neutrality—will cover energy\, buildings\, transportation\, waste and stormwater\, and they include recommendations from Urban Green’s 2018 Zone Greener report. \nIf enacted\, these changes will remove some existing barriers to decarbonization projects in the NYC zoning code\, and are particularly important for buildings. The amendments are now under a public review period\, and members of the public will be able to voice their comments at a City Planning Commission public hearing in July. \n Register Now \nEvent Cost \n\nNon-member: $20\nCore Member (incl.
