SUMMARY:"Project Spotlight: A Brutalist Passive House EnerPHit icon: Hotel Marcel\, Connecticut"
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming Project Spotlight follows the journey of an office building designed by Marcel Breuer into a retrofitted EnerPHit hotel featuring 165 suites. The successful retrofit breathed new life into a building\, aligning with modern sustainability aspirations. \nThe two speakers\, architect Bruce Becker from Becker + Becker and the certifier Dragos Arnautu from the Passive House Institute\, will give a detailed outline of how the retrofitting process went\, what thoughts went into the planning and how the EnerPHit standard was reached. They will provide details on what it meant to preserve the intricate facade while insulating the building for thermal comfort and energy efficiency\, the roof build-up\, the windows and ventilation concepts. \nFor the audience\, the goal of the Project Spotlight is twofold: On the one hand\, the presentation will showcase an architecturally pleasing\, interesting project\, while\, on the other hand\, we encourage attendees to consider how they could transfer some of the concepts into their own work. During the Q&A portion of the webinar\, attendees are encouraged to ask questions and go into detail on what interests them. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis iPHA member webinar will last approximately 90 minutes and is worth 2 Passive House Continuous Education (CEPH) credit points. \n\n Register Here

SUMMARY:Passive Progressive: A look at Passive House adoption and the need to accelerate! By: Handel Architects
DESCRIPTION:In the past 15 years Passive House in the United States has evolved from a niche pursuit of the energy-conscious architectural Avant Garde to being a set piece in a popular Showtime series (“The Curse”) starring two-time Oscar-winner Emma Stone.  Along the journey into the popular consciousness\, Passive House organizations have successfully certified hundreds of buildings across the country\, from single family homes and low-rise multi-family buildings to office buildings and high-rises.  Now in 2025\, the standard is becoming synonymous with high-performance building and is referenced in codes and climate policies in many of the nation’s most progressive jurisdictions. As exciting as Passive House’s growing popularity may be\, advocates have had a challenging time expanding to certain market sectors and regions. Given the proven energy benefits of Passive House\, accelerating the adoption of this standard and the high-performance strategies embedded within it is a necessary step if we intend to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. Recent federal efforts to rollback investment in the renewable energy sector has made it more critical than ever that we focus on reducing building energy demand through practical application of building science. \nThis course offers a practitioner’s perspective on the collective action and thoughtful leadership that has rapidly expanded the adoption of Passive House.  It will make the case that there is publicly available data from a range of sources that indicates Passive House cost premiums are manageable\, secondary benefits are tangible\, and actual energy consumption is greatly reduced.  The course will offer actionable steps to support the much-needed acceleration in the adoption of Passive House and high-performance building strategies across multiple market sectors. \n  \nAIA Credits: 1 LU/HSW – Approved\n \n Register here

SUMMARY:The Cornerstones Of Thermal Comfort: High Performance Windows - EMU
DESCRIPTION:Windows and exterior doors play a key role in the success of any project. They open up the building to daylight and exterior views\, and allow for natural ventilation. They are a key factor in a building energy balance\, and can provide free heating via passive solar gains. \nThey are also one of the most expensive line items on a project budget\, and can cause serious problems if not chosen wisely\, or installed poorly. Many associate windows with water leaks\, condensation\, and install issues. In high performance construction and Passive House\, the list of risks grows further and includes air leaks\, overheating\, wrong selection of key components (e.g. glass spacers and low-e coatings\, to name a couple)\, and of course over-spending. This presentation illustrates climate-specific goals and solutions in selecting the right package for windows and exterior doors. Different products are compared in terms of performance and cost-effectiveness\, and best practices for install details are illustrated side by side with their energy analysis. \nAIA Credits: 1 LU/HSW – Approved\n \nPHI Credits: 1 LU – Approved\n \n  \n Register Here
