SUMMARY:AIR MANAGEMENT IN A WARM/HUMID CLIMATE
DESCRIPTION:Our November Construction Tech presentation is a case study on the Beacon Hill Passive House\, the first certified Passive House (Phius) in the state of Missouri. While the team had previously deployed just about every type of wall assembly out there\, experimented with different waterproofing and air sealing strategies\, tried different glazing packages… this was the first home where they made the commitment to certify and it was a challenge to cross the threshold. David Schleicher and Joe Nickels (Kala Built) will hone in on their strategic approach to control and manage air. They will give an overview of the strategy that was doable in the Kansas City market: it had to be economically viable\, it had to appraise\, it had to provide the performance level desired for a structure in one of the most challenging climates in the country with hot/humid summers and cold/dry winters. David and Joe will be joined by M. Walker of Austin\, Texas based Positive Energy. \nThis free presentation will take place on Wednesday\, November 29th at 9am PT / 12pm ET and will be followed by a lively Q+A session. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from industry leaders and engage with the PHA community. See you there! \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Passive House for Everyone: Educating a new generation
DESCRIPTION:NYC-based Passive House architect and educator\, In Cho\, while encompassing policy support\, groundwork-building\, and training within the Passive House AEC community\, recognizes the critical need for a multifaceted approach to address the urgent environmental and social crises we face today. \nTrue change emerges when knowledge isn’t just a static repository but a catalyst for action. Education should empower individuals to transform their thinking and become active agents of environmental and social change. In this context\, transformative education is the linchpin that can reshape perceptions\, spark innovation\, and drive the widespread adoption of Energy Efficiency through Passive House. \nTo catalyze transformative education\, In Cho leverages the creative arts to enrich the learning experience. By integrating art and creativity into the process of learning about Energy Efficiency via Passive House principles\, she empowers individuals to think beyond the conventional and seek innovative solutions to the pressing challenges we face. This approach not only strengthens their imagination but also sharpens critical thinking skills and lifelong learning\, crucial for tackling our current environmental and social crises. \nSince the speaker In Cho is located in New York\, USA\, there will only be one live session. To accommodate those who cannot join because of the time difference\, we grant the CEPH points for watching the recording. Please register even if you cannot attend the live session so you will automatically receive a link to the recording. \nStart time: 6pm Frankfurt / 5pm London / noon New York | 9am San Francisco \n Register

SUMMARY:iPHA Webinar: Project Spotlight: Passive House car dealership in Alberta\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:During this Project Spotlight\, the two presenters will provide an inside glimpse into a unique building typology\, a Passive House car dealership in the very cold climate of Alberta\, Canada. Andrew Peel\, founder of Peel Passive House Consulting\, and Garrett Scott\, the dealership owner\, provide two different views on this pathbreaking project\, one being a very experienced Passive House Designer\, the other one looking for the best solution for his business while keeping environmental aspect in mind. \nA car dealership\, specifically in a harsh climate like this\, comes with unique challenges regarding Passive House planning because of the different types of space it includes\, like the showroom and offices\, but also the car service areas\, all having to achieve comfortable conditions while remaining energy efficient. This iPHA Project Spotlight will show the project’s challenges and lessons learned\, the compromises between the architects\, planners\, builders and owners\, and how the building turned out. \nFREE FOR NYPH MEMBERS \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Designing with Structural Thermal Breaks for Improved Comfort\, Efficiency and Moisture Control
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION:\nConcrete slabs and steel beams that project through the building envelope\, such as those used in the construction of balconies\, canopies and parapets\, break the insulation layer and create thermal bridging. Incorporating a thermal break within structural elements significantly improves the thermal performance of building envelopes and helps avoid costly issues down the road. \nThis course discusses solutions to thermally separate the external components from the insulated interior of the building\, minimizing thermal bridging\, energy loss and moisture issues. Attendees will learn the benefits of incorporating structural thermal breaks\, as well as the concerns and potential issues when they are not included. We will also discuss design best practices\, local building code requirements and how thermal breaks can contribute to certifications such as Passive House. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nWhy\, how and where thermal bridging occurs and the three primary problems it causes.\nWhy it is more important now than ever to address thermal bridging effectively.\nHow to incorporate structural thermal breaks into your design for maximum benefits regarding energy efficiency\, structural integrity\, and health and wellbeing of building occupants.\nWhat to expect and look for when working with a structural thermal break supplier.\n\nCHRIS’ BIO: \n \n\nChris Ford is the Eastern USA Regional Sales Manager for Schöck North America and has been with the company since 2016. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology\, and specializes in technical consulting for engineering and construction projects. \nChris is a Certified PMP\, LEED Green Associate and Certified Green Roof Professional. Prior to joining Schöck\, Chris lent his expertise to numerous projects for Stantec Engineering\, Tishman Construction and LEHR Construction\, and worked on MTACC’s East Side Access transportation project. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:PHLab | Passive House Live Sync is an add-in for Autodesk® Revit®
DESCRIPTION:Presented by PH Live Sync\, organized by NYPH\nSummary:\nAll the hard work is done for you! Simply and quickly sync your BIM model with the PHPP. Make design changes directly to your BIM or within the PHPP and then re-sync all your changes in seconds! Spend more time designing and less time on data entry. Easily sync the relevant BIM data to the PHPP…then sync any updates made in the PHPP back to the BIM! \nPH Live Sync is an add-in for Autodesk® Revit® allowing two-way Live Syncing with the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP)® and the BIM. \nYou will learn about the features of PH Live Sync and how much easier it is to develop a Passivhaus project. \nAbout the Presenter:\nAnthony Burns is the director of a boutique building design office in Melbourne Australia that specializes in custom design homes and achieving sustainability using the highly energy efficient Passivhaus building method.  \nIn 2016 Anthony was involved in the design and documentation of a new home in Emerald Victoria\, which was one of the early Passivhaus projects in Australia to be certified. \nAs a designer\, Anthony wanted additional design tools that support Passivhaus projects and make the design process smoother\, faster\, and more accurate. This led to the development of PH Live Sync\, which is now a fully developed tool that integrates Autodesk® Revit® directly with the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP.) \nAnthony hopes PH Live Sync will make the adoption of Passivhaus easier for designers and ultimately lead to more sustainable and energy efficient buildings around the world. \nQualifications:\nAnthony is a Registered Building Designer with more than 20 years’ industry experience in residential and commercial projects. Anthony has worked on several Passivhaus projects and is a Certified Passive House Designer and member of the Australian Passive House Association (APHA.) \nLearning Outcomes\n\nHow PH Live Sync can save you time.\nHow developing a Passivhaus project can be made more streamlined.\nThat you don’t need to be an expert on the PHPP to get started with your first Passivhaus projects.\n\n Register

SUMMARY:How To Prepare For High Performance Windows
DESCRIPTION:475 High Performance Building Supply + Sash and Frame team up for this in-person training event followed by happy hour. \nYour windows are nice\, but how’s your install? \nWindows are often big\, heavy\, fragile\, and in Passive House buildings\, windows are the most valuable components. When aiming for high performance\, you want to make sure windows are properly installed. It’s about your building enclosure: one wrong move and your exterior walls can also suffer expensive damage. \nOptimal window installs take into account vapor drive at different times of year\, and take steps to super-insulate the window frames for the best thermal performance. In this workshop we look at window installations that are airtight and correctly flashed – and as a result will last the life of the building. A proper window install will bump up your building’s comfort and efficiency\, while ensuring that your walls stay dry. With both presentation and hands-on mock-ups\, the workshop aims to provide tools for simple and effective high performance window installations. \nRegister
