SUMMARY:Guidance for Emerging Sustainable Design Warriors 2: Passive House Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:The first tour (House 1:The Von Mueller House in Midwood/Flatbush Area) will be offered at 11:30 AM–1:00 PM and the second tour (House 2: Park Slope House in Park Slope Area) will be from 2:30–4:00 PM.  \nIt is a 45 minute car drive between both homes.\nWe are organizing a bus to transport attendees from House 1 to House 2. Please be sure to let us know if you will need a seat on the bus by answering the required question during registration. \nGuidance for Emerging Sustainable Design Warriors: House Tour is intended to take a deep dive through two existing home renovations. Both projects are based on Passive House principles that demonstrate Net Zero achievements and sustainable entrepreneurship strategies. These principles can inform public policy to create meaningful and achievable incentives for “Net Zero Zip Codes” that can also serve as green economic zones. \nThe Von Mueller House is an ongoing collaboration between the building owner and the Vihara Foundation’s Super Energy Efficiency Building Initiative for Climate Action (SEEBICA). SEEBICA aims to deliver a scalable net-zero community housing retrofit—a model being designed for urban cities to achieve high-performance residential sector building energy efficiency at scale. This is achieved through solar photovoltaic\, shallow field geothermal heat pump heating and cooling\, rainwater harvesting\, provisioning for salt water battery energy storage\, mechanical ventilation\, a green wall for food production and summer solar heat gain reduction\, onsite composting and gardening and optimized utility efficiency. \nThe Park Slope House\, an 1880’s house renovation\, is unique as it utilized a prototype German Air to Water heat pump system provided by Dimplex Germany and Taco United States for the mechanical system which consists of hydronic radiant floor and AC/dehumidification. This rigorous implementation\, built to match passive house standards\, resulted in a no compromise energy cost-free home with high interior comfort\, improved air quality\, and a remarkable carbon footprint reduction. The home and installation has been featured in trade magazines such as HVACR Contractors Magazine\, and is set to be in mainstream news outlets detailing modern air to water heat pump installations and sustainable building techniques. \nTour Guides:\nChester Birchwood\, Heating and Ventilation engineer; Renewable Energy Engineer; Managing Director\, HVAC Kings LLC; Partner\, B.K Climate Solutions\nItai Kaitano\, Founder\, BK Climate Solutions\nDennis Ramdahin\, Founder\, Vihara Foundation\, Smart Community Master Planner\, Green Building Professional and Climate Finance Engineer \nPlease note: \n\nMeeting location will be emailed to registered attendees the day before the tour.\nThese tours are not accessible by wheelchair. Attendees will have to climb stairs in order to access basement areas where the building systems are located.\nAttendees will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to entering the homes.\n\n\n  \n Register Now >

SUMMARY:AIR MANAGEMENT IN A WARM/HUMID CLIMATE
DESCRIPTION:Our November Construction Tech presentation is a case study on the Beacon Hill Passive House\, the first certified Passive House (Phius) in the state of Missouri. While the team had previously deployed just about every type of wall assembly out there\, experimented with different waterproofing and air sealing strategies\, tried different glazing packages… this was the first home where they made the commitment to certify and it was a challenge to cross the threshold. David Schleicher and Joe Nickels (Kala Built) will hone in on their strategic approach to control and manage air. They will give an overview of the strategy that was doable in the Kansas City market: it had to be economically viable\, it had to appraise\, it had to provide the performance level desired for a structure in one of the most challenging climates in the country with hot/humid summers and cold/dry winters. David and Joe will be joined by M. Walker of Austin\, Texas based Positive Energy. \nThis free presentation will take place on Wednesday\, November 29th at 9am PT / 12pm ET and will be followed by a lively Q+A session. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from industry leaders and engage with the PHA community. See you there! \nLearn More

SUMMARY:March to End Fossil Fuels
DESCRIPTION:Join the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York on September 17th\,* 2023! With wildfire smoke choking the air we breathe\, hurricanes and floods threatening our homes\, and toxic pollution making us sick\, it has never been more urgent to end our dependence on the leading cause of these crises – fossil fuels.  \nIn New York this September\, the United Nations will gather world leaders for a first-of-its-kind Climate Ambition Summit to demand that nations stop developing new oil\, gas and coal projects and begin phasing out fossil fuels once and for all. With his recent approvals for mega-polluting projects like the Willow Oil Drilling Project and the Mountain Valley Pipeline\, President Biden must immediately reverse course to earn his seat at the table. But it will take all of us acting together to make sure he does. \nThis September\, in the largest climate march since the pandemic\, thousands will march in New York City to demand President Biden take bold action to End Fossil Fuels.  \nLearn More \nRSVP \n Volunteer Form \n*We recognize this mobilization is planned for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. There were a number of factors that led us to choose this date\, and we did not make this decision lightly. We deeply respect Jewish communities have different relationships with protest and social action during the High Holidays. We honor and affirm that many Jewish communities and organizations will be praying at this time and celebrate their observance.

SUMMARY:Moisture Management and Protection Strategies for Mass Timber Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Interest in mass timber and awareness of its advantages have exploded in recent years. But with any new construction technique comes new challenges. For mass timber\, a particular concern is moisture protection during construction: there have been many examples of floor and roof panels exposed to snow or rain\, resulting in significant increases in wood moisture content and the potential for slow and limited drying ability depending on the assembly. \nSignificant wetting of mass timber during construction can lead to staining of finished surfaces\, requiring sanding and refinishing\, as well as expansion leading to damaged mechanical connections\, fungal growth\, and the possibility of structural damage. Fortunately\, many solutions exist\, but choosing between them can be daunting—the cost-benefit of these strategies is often questioned  and becomes a risk management choice. \n Register

SUMMARY:NYC Next: Trends for a Changing City
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 8\, 2023\nTime: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nLocation: In-Person • NYU Kimmel Center for University Life\nRegister: https://www.urbangreencouncil.org/2023-conference/  \nUse Code NYPH10 for $10 off tickets to the conference. \nEvent description\nGetting to net zero\, housing conversions\, and resilient all-electric buildings. \nTo reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050\, New York City will continue to undergo some pretty big changes. And as buildings are responsible for more than two-thirds of the city’s emissions\, the majority of those changes will occur in the places where we live\, work and gather. But what can we expect these changes to be? How will buildings in 2050 look different from today? Who will do the work? And how does it all fit into the larger scope of the Paris Climate Agreement\, which aims to bring emissions to net zero by 2050? \nIn our 2023 conference\, NYC Next: Trends for a Changing City\, we’re bringing together experts to explain three key trends that will shape the city: getting to net zero\, converting offices to apartments\, and centering resiliency in NYC’s buildings of the future. We’ll talk to the individuals who have an inside look at these trends and are doing the work to make NYC’s climate targets a reality. \n Learn more
